Editorial | Aurora Chief of Police Vanessa Wilson should be lauded for her work, not ousted.
Wilson took over as head of the Aurora police department at a moment of crisis, and she has brought stability and reform to an agency that had lost the trust of the community.
Funny because we think the dirty laundry of police officers should be aired. Wilson has done an excellent job of publicly condemning and apologizing for the behavior of Aurora police officers when it is out-of-line. The public should know about officers’ bad behavior and if it is swept under the rug too often officers land jobs in other cities or counties only to repeat their infractions.
She fired an officer caught on body camera repeatedly striking a man with his gun. She fired another officer who witnessed the incident but did not attempt to stop the assault. She fired the president of one of Aurora’s two police unions for sending an overtly racist email to his staff about efforts to increase diversity of the police force.
