banning courses that would lead any individual to “feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress on account of his or her race or sex” in an effort to ban what many Republicans incorrectly call critical race theory. The House version of the bill that ultimately passed and has led to concerns among teachers about their ability to engage their students in complex discussions.
Creighton has been an outspoken advocate for school safety, both for students and teachers. In a recent Senate hearing of the Committee to Protect All Texans, Creighton expressed dismay that only 7 percent of school districts had a sufficient emergency operation plan in the event of an active shooter or other imminent threat, and he pledged to continue pushing for improvement at the state and local levels.
While we think more needs to be done on education in Texas, from better teacher retirement pensions to increased funding for schools, we credit Creighton for his recent work on the Texas Commission on Community College Finance. The commission last month proposed an overhaul of the community college system that would tie funding to how well schools get students to complete certificate or degree programs, or move on to four-year universities.
