The European election ballots will be separated this morning but the actual counting won't begin until tomorrow

The counting of votes in the local elections will start at 9am after the country took to the polls in the local and European elections.

Without an exit poll candidates face a more nervous wait than usual to find out how they and their parties have done. From there we will get the first indication of how Ireland has voted when tallies are conducted at count centres while the votes are being separated and sorted.Local election ballot papers will stay in their respective count centres, while those for the European elections will be transported to one of three EU count centres in either Castlebar, Cork or Dublin's RDS.

When it comes to timelines we should start seeing first count results in the local elections from late afternoon or early evening. The European votes will not start counting until Sunday morning. Limerick will not start counting the Mayoral votes until Monday. The tallies will give us the first real taste of how Ireland has voted in these elections - so watch out for a number of things.

One: Has Sinn Féin managed to address its slide in the polls in the last few days or has it now run too many candidates in some wards?Their councillors are mostly in the cities so if they are tallying poorly in the capital it will be an early sign of a rough weekend ahead. With no polling done there are five or six candidates who will feel they have a realistic shot.Main image: Ballots waiting to be filled at a polling station in Dublin, 7-6-24.
