Electric Picnic is set to introduce women's urinals to reduce waiting times, an Irishman faces prison for anti-Semitic threats, the death toll from Nepal floods continues to rise, and actor Tim Curry has died at 80.
Electric Picnic, one of Ireland's premier music festivals, is set to introduce women's urinals this year, a first for the Irish festival scene. These facilities, provided by UK company Peequal, are expected to significantly reduce waiting times for women, who have traditionally faced longer queues than their male counterparts.
The urinals, which provide coverage from the waist down and are designed for users to squat rather than sit, are open-air and touch-free, minimizing contact with doors, locks, or seats. Peequal's reported 90% rebooking rate attests to their popularity and effectiveness. Festival director Melvin Benn, who is familiar with these facilities from other major UK events like Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds, anticipates a positive response from attendees.
'I'm told they are a much cleaner and better and quicker experience,' he said, 'and that's something that I hope people do enjoy. ' The introduction of women's urinals at Electric Picnic is part of a broader effort to address the persistent gender disparity in toilet queues at festivals. Peequal's general manager, Sarah McClean, emphasizes that these facilities serve a practical purpose rather than being a novelty.
'Men have had the freedom to use urinals and get straight back to enjoying an event for years,' she said, 'so why shouldn't women have the same option? ' The company has invested considerable time in researching and developing the best design for these urinals to ensure they effectively address the issue.
In unrelated news, an Irishman is facing up to five years in prison in France after being arrested for making threatening remarks to Jewish people in a French supermarket. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was filmed making the threats, including telling a Jewish woman that he would 'put a bullet' in her head. The incident is part of a rising trend of anti-Semitic incidents in Europe, with the number of victims increasing.
Meanwhile, the search for hundreds of people still unaccounted for after devastating floods in Nepal continues. The floods, which tore through the Himalayan border region with China's Tibet, have claimed at least 162 lives, with the death toll expected to rise. Rescue helicopters were back in the air on Thursday morning, continuing the search and rescue efforts in the affected areas.
In entertainment news, actor Tim Curry, best known for his role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show,' has died at the age of 80. Curry, who had been suffering from significant health problems since a stroke in 2012, was also known for his roles in films like 'Clue' and 'Muppet Treasure Island.
' His death was reported by The Independent, quoting a report from TMZ
