Electric Picnic Review: Musical Triumphs and Logistical Hurdles
Electric Picnic, CMAT, Ireland Music Festivals

An in-depth look at this year's Electric Picnic, highlighting CMAT's emotional performance, surprise guest appearances, and the safety concerns regarding crowd control.

The festival saw a triumphant return for CMAT, often hailed as the Dunboyne Diana, who delivered a rousing cover of Jolene to kick off her Saturday night.

After a health scare forced her to miss a performance in France, her presence at Electric Picnic felt like a victory of will. She noted that this performance was the most significant of her career, emphasizing that the magic comes from being understood by her own people in her home country. The energy continued to climb with the arrival of the New York pop star Sombr, whose entrance was nothing short of ludicrous.

After arriving in a Mercedes and attempting to shoot a glass of stout with a crossbow, he delivered a raw and powerful cover of Zombie with the support of Noel and Mike Hogan. The surprise addition of Lola Young to the Saturday slot further electrified the crowd, while Fonda Jane brought a nostalgic 1970s vibe to the Crescent Earth stage, encouraging attendees to stretch and dance to the Fame soundtrack in a high-energy wake-up call.

Beyond the main stages, the social atmosphere was vibrant and deeply rooted in Irish culture. The presence of the All-Ireland winning footballers from Mayo brought a wave of local pride, as fans waved flags and wore jerseys to the tune of the band's song, Green and Red of Mayo.

The general mood of the crowd was overwhelmingly positive, evidenced by small but meaningful interactions, such as a Fontaines DC fan sharing his mobile hotspot with a journalist to ensure a review could be filed on time. There was also a noticeable improvement in the cleanliness of the main arena, suggesting that the festival organizers had stepped up their maintenance efforts.

The Lovely Local, a two-storey tribute to the Irish pub sponsored by Guinness, provided a cool environment for a standout performance by The Scratch, which left the audience dancing in the rain despite the unpredictable weather. Despite the musical successes, the festival faced significant logistical challenges that marred the experience for some. Camping became an issue as early-access guests occupied vast areas of the site, leaving late arrivals with almost no space to pitch their tents.

The most serious incident occurred at the Smirnoff Stage, where overcrowding became dangerous during the build-up to Armand Van Helden's set. The density of the crowd caused people to fall over in a domino effect, leading organizers to cancel the performance for safety reasons. This highlighted a pressing need for better crowd control and improved pathways to facilitate movement between the various stages.

Additionally, some attendees found the stewarding to be inconsistent, with different staff members giving contradictory directions. While the branding from sponsors like Flogas and Bank of Ireland was polished and professional, the lack of high-quality cocktail options and the typical Irish rain served as reminders that there is still room for improvement in the festival's infrastructure and overall accessibility
