Surgeries cancelled at two Cork hospitals due to overcrowding and staff shortages
Cork's two main hospitals have had to implement emergency measures to deal with overcrowding and staff shortages.
The meeting yesterday came before what is usually the one of the busiest weeks of the year for emergency departments. Progress was made after three hours of discussions and the decision was made to cancel all elective procedures at the two hospitals until further notice. The move to emergency measures has drawn strong criticism. Cork TD Mick Barry has called for clarification on the promised Cork elective surgery-only hospital which has been planned to reduce pressure on existing services here.
