Frazer Hines was a household name thanks to his role as Joe Sugden in Emmerdale
Former Emmerdale star Frazer Hines, who played the role of Annie Sugden's son from 1972 to 1994, has revealed that he kept his cancer diagnosis a secret as he didn't want to be pitied or alienated. This was also the reason behind his decision not to have children - a choice he still regrets.
His passion for horses led him to become an amateur jockey in the seventies, and he has co-owned a stud farm in Newbury for many years - two of his horses were even named after his characters Joe Sugden and Jamie McCrimmon. Despite wanting to focus on his business and marriage, Frazer didn't slow down post-Emmerdale, starring in several series including Dalziel and Pascoe, Out of Sight and even Outlander, which he helped inspire.
Frazer underwent a five-hour operation to remove most of his lower colon and the tumours. However, his surgeon informed him that the cancer had spread and he required chemotherapy. At one point, he was told he only had a 25 per cent chance of survival. "Liz was desperate for a child. But in my mind I thought, why? I could die. Then I found the marriage was beginning to deteriorate." Frazer expressed remorse over his actions during that period: "You go through this self doubt. It was my fault, I just withdrew and said I don't want to have a family. It was incredibly selfish."
