Ned Porteous is back on our screens as Joe Tate in Emmerdale after a five-year hiatus, seeking revenge for past grievances. While his character in the soap opera is driven by vengeance, the actor himself leads a different life off-screen.

Ned Porteous is making a comeback to our screens as Joe Tate in Emmerdale after a five-year absence from the soap world. His return to the village comes after a tumultuous period that saw him entangled in a relationship with Debbie Dingle before turning against her and narrowly escaping death. This time, he's back with a thirst for revenge. However, the actor portraying this complex character is vastly different from his on-screen persona in real life.

Ned Porteous, born Edward Graham Porteous on July 7, 1994, is a 30-year-old actor hailing from High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, England. His passion for acting led him to study at the esteemed Tring Park School for the Performing Arts before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Acting from Guildford School of Acting in 2015.Porteous' acting journey began in 2015 with a guest appearance in the BBC medical drama, Holby City, where he portrayed Rufus Lucas. He made his foray into the world of soap operas the following year with a 13-episode run as Mark Fowler, the son of Grant and Michelle Fowler, in EastEnders. His breakthrough role came in 2017 when he joined Emmerdale, initially playing Tom Waterhouse, a character who claimed to be a young businessman. It was later revealed that his true identity was Joseph Tate, the orphaned son of Christopher Tate and Rachel Hughes, and the half-brother of Noah Dingle. This role earned him several soap awards nominations and the 2018 TV Choice Award for Best Soap Newcomer. He departed Emmerdale in 2018 to pursue a feature film career, making his debut in the horror film, Astral. Viewers may also recognize him from his portrayal of Lord Wetherby, Henry Granville's lover, in the first season of Bridgerton. Ned returned to the role of Emmerdale’s Joe Tate in December 2024 and has also recently appeared in an episode of Grantchester as Harvey Baron.
