Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm called out Exxon Mobil Friday, saying it and other oil companies were partly responsible for the increase in gasoline prices this year and need to increase fuel supplies.

The strongly worded statement referenced a letter the Houston-based oil giant sent to the Energy Department this week. In that letter, Exxon CEO Darren Woods pushed back against arguments by some Democrats that the administration should restrict oil exports to reduce fuel prices here, arguing it would lead to"unintended, negative consequences."

"These companies need to focus less on taking every last dollar off the table, and more on passing through savings to their customers," she said in a statement."If companies like Exxon Mobil continue to believe that 'free market incentives remain the most efficient way for the industry to address these problems,' they need to step up and show results for American consumers and the American economy.
