Nearly 80 per cent of England's rivers, lakes and coastal waters may fail to reach a 'good' standard by 2027, a post-Brexit watchdog warns
Nearly 80 per cent of England's rivers, lakes and coastal waters may fail to reach a 'good' standard by 2027, a post-Brexit watchdog warns, lakes and coastal waters achieve a “good” ecological health status by 2027, compared to just 16 per cent of water bodies currently.
“This means it is not delivering as intended and, as a consequence, most of our open water is likely to remain in a poor state in the years ahead unless things change. This is deeply concerning,” said the OEP chair, Dame Glenys Stacey. It added that other major sources of pollution, including agriculture and transport, “are not receiving the same resources or attention”.
Agriculture is also a major source of water pollution, which occurs when manure is spread as fertiliser and then washes into rivers when it rains.
