'Enough is enough': The push to protect doctors from mental illness l stuartlayt
More needs to be done to save medical professionals from the stigma of mental illness and allow them to get help if they need it, an annual gathering of the country's top doctors has been told.
As part of the push, the conference officially moved for the AMA to reconfirm its support for the 2017 Declaration of the World Medical Association. It states states, among other things, that doctors “attend to their own health, wellbeing and abilities in order to provide care of the highest standard.”
Dr Toogood himself struggled with depression and attempted suicide before seeking help for his condition. He said the problem should be dealt with starting with medical colleges and moving up from there, addressing the problem early to change the attitudes of the next generation of medical professionals.
