Covid situation taking a turn in Spain and Portugal but will it change entry requirements for Irish tourists?

Covid cases are on the rise in Ireland and the rest of Europe as a summer wave grips the continent despite high vaccine rates.

Experts are blaming the BA.4 and BA.5 variants for the summer bounce with their high transmissibility seen as a huge issue. In Spain, on Tuesday, more than 50,000 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed with the 14-day incident rate per 100,000 people now more than 650.The incidence rate has risen by 40 in just four days amid the latest wave.

Hospital numbers are also at their highest since February, but it isn't sparking any changes to rules or restrictions, which is good news for Irish tourists.Portugal are experiencing a similar rise in Covid cases although they now appear to have gotten through the peak of the summer wave. The EU Covid cert does still apply when travelling to Portugal however so Irish tourists should have that at the ready before heading on any flights.
