Issues are mounting for Erik ten Hag at Man United after four defeats in five games, despite players returning from injury.
There was reputed applause in the home dressing room at Old Trafford while Brighton celebrated in their sanctuary across the tunnel.
Bruno Fernandes holds a huddle prior to second halves yet United are a muddle. Fernandes was particularly abysmal against Bayern Munich and while he has captaincy credentials, he has to finesse his leadership. His loose pass led to Mathys Tel slamming in his decisive half-volley. The manner of United's defeats this season have not plumbed to the fathoms of the 2021-22 season or the generational nadir at Brentford last August. That is what makes the volume of their defeats - four in the last five - so troubling.
McTominay has limitations but he is usually a workhorse and until Wednesday night could not be accused of failing to put in a shift. He knows the beginning of the end of his United career has started and he was the only casualty from the Brighton battering. McTominay still cannot hide behind the psychological dents to his confidence.
Mason Mount, recruited as a central midfielder, now seems destined to occupy the problematic right-sided role in the absence of an appealing option to Ten Hag. He finally relented and started Facundo Pellistri, initially urgent against Alphonso Davies, but Bayern Munich was an unforgiving setting for his first truly competitive United start.
