A prisoner who escaped custody while receiving medical treatment at a Dublin hospital has been re-arrested by Irish police. Keith Macken, a man in his 40s from Cabra, was taken to Tallaght Hospital after feeling unwell at Wheatfield Prison. Macken had been held at Wheatfield Prison since late last year awaiting sentencing for an assault charge. He had been receiving treatment at Tallaght Hospital in the days leading up to his escape.
At approximately 6am on Saturday morning, Macken escaped from custody. The Irish Prison Service was immediately notified, and a manhunt was launched. A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service released a statement on Saturday, confirming the escape and stating that An Garda Síochána had been provided with all relevant information about the escaped prisoner. The Irish Prison Service launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape. By Monday, the Irish Prison Service confirmed that Macken had been recaptured by An Garda Síochána and returned to custody. An investigation into the escape is ongoing.
