Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said European leaders need to be open to any credible proposals that Theresa May puts forward to break the Brexit deadlock at an emergency summit next week.

Speaking in Paris as he arrived for a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Mr Varadkar said if the UK changed its red lines, changes could be made to the declaration on a future relationship.

Mr Varadkar said while the UK was consumed with Brexit, he said Ireland, France and the EU should not be. "We need to be open to any proposals that she may bring forward to us," adding that as things stood Britain was heading towards a no-deal exit. The Taoiseach would only say Ireland had prepared intensively for a ‘no-deal' scenario, but he said nobody should underestimate the difficulties it posed for all of us.
