A draft of the EU summit conclusions reiterates that the Withdrawal Agreement cannot be renegotiated.
The date is the day before European elections are due to start, and the draft conclusions say that there should be no Brexit extension beyond the elections."The European Union commits to agreeing, before March 29 2019, to an extension until 22 May, provided the Withdrawal Agreement is approved by the House of Commons next week," said the draft, seen by Reuters.
Earlier, she said a short delay to Britain's departure from the European Union would give parliament in Westminster time to make a final choice on Brexit. "We do respect the vote of the British people. We do respect what the prime minister and parliament are making. On her arrival in Brussels, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said: "To the last hour, we must do everything to ensure that there can be an orderly British exit from the EU."One option is that the exit agreement and the clarifications agreed in Strasbourg, which I think are very good, will get a majority in the British parliament.
Having spent the best part of three years declaring that Britain would leave at the end of March, Mrs May now has to face the humiliation of seeking an extension because the House of Commons has rejected the agreement twice.
