The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, will visit Ireland next month. It is the first visit from a European Parliament President in over ten years and is scheduled to take place on 2 and 3 February
Roberta Metsola was elected to the position a year ago, and this will be her first visit to Ireland since taking up the role.
It is the first visit from a European Parliament President in over ten years and is scheduled to take place on 2 and 3 February. Ms Metsola is the youngest person to hold the position of parliament president and the first female president in over 20 years. The visit comes as the parliament grapples with an alleged bribery scandal, with one MEP charged with corruption and currently in custody in Belgium.Ms Metsola did not identify the two MEPs in her statement, but said it was in response to an investigation by Belgian law enforcement into the bribery allegations.
It is expected that the immunity waiver will be voted on by MEPs in Strasbourg later this month, when they gather for their plenary session.
