Residents were ordered to evacuate an apartment building in North Miami Beach, Florida, after engineers found the five-story structure unsafe, a discovery that comes months after the deadly condo building collapse in nearby Surfside.
A firm hired by the owners of Bayview 60 Homes to help bring the building up to regulation for its upcoming 50-year recertification alerted officials to its assessment Monday, North Miami Beach City Manager Arthur Sorey said. The structure, built in 1972, had previously passed it’s 40-year recertification inspections.
"Therefore it is my responsibility to inform you that the building structure is structurally unsound and must be evacuated immediately," Taurinski wrote. Unsafe amounts of deflection often also include cracking, said Rick Slider, a South Florida structural engineer.A North Miami Beach condo building deemed structurally unsafe is evacuated on April 4, 2022."The City is working with the owner to ensure that all residents will receive proper assistance as they relocate within the next 24 hours," Sorey said.
