The Boys in Green have avoided relegation to League C and will contest the March playoff instead
Sunday’s date in Wembley may well be the leveller that keeps expectations in check, but Ireland fans can still see green shoots of recovery.
But after banking his first home win as Ireland boss, Heimir Hallgrimsson will take the victory and clean sheet while adopting a ‘more to do’ approach, as this was decent but by no means perfect. All week the message in the Ireland camp was about finding a way to take control of games quicker. Ireland came from behind to beat the Finns in Helsinki, but it didn’t have to be that way and Nathan Collins’ soft mistake made the job tougher than it should have been.
In the absence of Robbie Brady, Callum O’Dowda’s deliveries from the left were decent and, on the other side, Festy Ebosele caused ripples of excitement whenever he got on the ball, even if his end product was lacking. Still, Ireland were playing with some purpose. They chose the latter and Ferguson was on hand close in to head home Johnston’s cross on half-time. The 20-year-old has had to be patient at Brighton this term, having returned from a lengthy layoff after ankle surgery, and this was only his second goal of the season but could be the launchpad he needs to kick on.
