Former Everton goalkeeper Andy Rankin whose save clinched victory in the first-ever penalty shoot-out in European competition, has died aged 79
Former Everton goalkeeper Andy Rankin, who has died aged 79, made history by making the save that clinched victory in the first-ever penalty shoot-out in a UEFA competition.
Everton was in the blood for the Rankin family as Andy’s grandfather Bruce Rankin made 38 appearances and scored seven goals for the Blues, primarily as a winger, between 1902-05, while his cousin George Rankin was a left-back and played 39 times for the club in the 1950s. Originally signing for Everon as an amateur when he was 17, Rankin made his first team debut in a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on November 16, 1963.
In the first leg at the Bökelbergstadion so Howard Kendall’s 47th minute effort cancel out Berti Vogts’ 35th minute opener. Back at Goodison Park, Johnny Morrissey fired the Blues ahead after just 23 seconds before Herbert Laumen restored parity on 34 minutes.
