Dominic Calvert-Lewin went off with a facial injury during Everton's 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa
The striker lasted just 36 minutes of his return to action after a summer spent working to build resilience following two seasons blighted by injury. Sean Dyche confirmed the player is not believed to have suffered a concussion and the club added his exit was because his vision was impaired. He left the pitch with a visible facial injury sustained in a collision with the Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Calvert-Lewin’s withdrawal came with Everton already two goals down against a Villa side whose quality overwhelmed them. Alex Iwobi, who played in every game of last season, was also substituted off with injury. Dyche said the 27-year-old is thought to have suffered a hamstring issue and the club is waiting on the severity of the problem to be assessed.EFC RATINGS: Michael Keane and many others woeful at Villa
Other wide options Jack Harrison and Dwight McNeil remain weeks from fitness while Demarai Gray remains absent from the first team, Dyche having said this week that this is due to his condition. The winger enjoyed a successful Gold Cup with Jamaica this summer but has not featured for the first team since his return.
Idrissa Gueye was a half-time substitute but Dyche said after the 4-0 defeat that his withdrawal was not due to injury. Iwobi’s hamstring issue makes him the thirteenth player within the senior squad who currently has questions over his condition.
