Only 86 of its type remain in the country
It's one of Britain's few remaining 'iron chapels' and has resounded with joyous services for more than 100 years. The tin tabernacle in Newton Heath opened in 1909, but locals feared for its future when it went up for sale.
"It should be kept and listed. I do attend the church, but I am not a Christian just a neighbour. The church is used by many youngsters playing musical instruments and singing plus many social events. This is one of the oldest buildings in Newton Heath and is an asset to us when we are described as one of the most deprived areas of Manchester."
In a privately published history of what became the Parish Church known today as All Saints Newton Heath, author is Pauline Ryan, writes of the dispute from which the Newton Heath Evangelical Church was created. It reads: "Ritualistic Practices and Sacerdotal Teaching such as are in vogue at All Saints’ have always been in the eyes of the greatest divines of the Church of England, inimical to, and subversive of the great foundation truths of the Gospel – in fact its greatest enemy. For these reasons we cannot conscientiously comply with the requirement of Clause 1 by being regular worshippers at All Saints’ Church. We therefore tender our resignations herewith.
"We have told the current congregation who use the tabernacle that they can continue to use it until they find another premises - we will not leave them with nowhere." Historic England says of them: "Quickly assembled places of worship, these structures were designed to serve a temporary purpose before more permanent stone or brick structures could be built."
