Former lap dancer hits out at 'sexist crusade' two years after Blackpool bans all future strip clubs

A former lap dancer has warned that a policy to shut strip clubs is a "sexist crusade" and will put thousands of women's' jobs at risk.

Now, the council's new policy aimed at phasing out lap dancing clubs in Blackpool was used for the first time last year to turn down licence applications. An application for a new sexual entertainment venue licence for Dreams in Queen Street was refused, along with an application for a new SEV licence for Mystique, also in Queen Street. The council’s public protection sub-committee threw out both applications after deferring previous hearings to consider the submissions.

Chelsea has warned that British strip clubs could utterly vanish by 2030, having "devastating consequences" for the thousands of women employed in the sector. She said: "Lapdancing clubs have been a fixture in city centres for decades. They are overwhelmingly safe spaces where women can choose to earn good wages. But women could have these opportunities snatched from them by politicians – often men – who think they know what’s best for females.

“However once the licence is surrendered or revoked, any new application would be considered against the limit of zero. Licences may reduce naturally by lack of demand for this activity, but lack of demand will mean that other operators will not wish to enter the trade. As with all Council policies, this policy will be subject to regular review and any concerns can be addressed during the review process.

A leading stag and hen do company launched a Freedom of Information request to some of the biggest authorities in the UK, which shows that there has been no licencing complaints in the past seven years, despite lap dancing establishments being run up and down the country. This includes establishments in top cities like Newcastle and Liverpool.

Politicians in Bristol and Edinburgh have attempted to enforce the nil-cap policies which would stop new clubs from opening and existing ones to close for good. Both of these councils have been forced back in previous attempts. In Edinburgh, the city's 'pubic triangle' were allowed to keep operating after campaigners won a judicial review.
