Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is no longer a guaranteed starter at Old Trafford after Erik ten Hag stripped the England international of the captaincy

Sir Alex Ferguson's former assistant Mike Phelan believes Harry Maguire could play as a defensive midfielder for Manchester United.

Yet Phelan, who was Maguire's manager at Hull, believes he could play further up the pitch. The former Man Utd coach thinks Maguire is a "top player" who is composed on the ball and will "give everything" for the Red Devils when called upon this season. Maguire moved to Hull in the summer of 2014 when they were a Premier League club. He didn't play much during his first season in East Yorkshire, spending time on loan at Wigan, but became a first-team player after they were relegated to the Championship.

"Yes, the fee was a lot. But you're not in control of that. Having come to United, he did really well. He had composure on the ball."Phelan believes Maguire has struggled at United because of their unsettled midfield and backline. He added: "What he didn't have was a settled environment of who played in front of him, who sat alongside him. He jumped in at the deep end a little bit.
