The former owner of Verree Pharmacy in Fox Chase has been sentenced to 3.5 years in prison and will pay more than $4.1 million in fines for making false insurance claims.

, Mitchell Spivack, 63, was the owner of Verree Pharmacy in the Fox Chase neighborhood of Philadelphia for 30 years. He was sentenced on Tuesday for defrauding the government under the Controlled Substances Act and False Claims Act.

The pharmacy had at one point ordered more of the prescription painkiller OxyContin than any other pharmacy in the United States. When pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma changed the formula of OxyContin so that the pills could no longer be easily crushed for snorting or injecting, the store’s OxyContin sales rapidly dropped to half of their previous orders.
