The start of the Championship season is here and fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming matches. The recent League final between Dublin and Derry has only increased the excitement. The author discusses the potential for surprise upsets in the upcoming matches, particularly in Ulster.
It used to be May, that’s true, and it’s still taking time for many of us to get used to it now being April. The classic between Dublin and Derry in the League final has certainly whetted the appetite.
Tyrone were All-Ireland champions as recently as 2021, so there’s plenty to get excited about. Well, in Ulster... That’s part of the deal when you’re taking directions on how to play the game and how to live your life. Some of the older brigade, myself included, liked to have a smoke with their beer, and this was frowned upon by Jim McGuinness. Hardly a surprise.
Staying away from drink for months and then going at it aggressively for a day or two or three. That unhealthy relationship with alcohol was ingrained into me early. What I believe now is that, if you can train and play at the level required, then do what you want outside of that but, if you can’t, then we’ve a problem. When I was a kid, a few of us loved playing football but we had no field to play in. We had the option of training once or twice a week on the club pitch or finding a field where we could play whenever we wanted.I’d always be Tony Boyle. There’d always be a fight as a few others wanted to be Anthony Tohill.
