A child who falls apart on holidays is not a "difficult" child. They are not being bold. They are not trying to ruin your holiday.

Their nervous system is simply fighting the temperature. July in Ireland is a beautiful thing. Long evenings. Ice cream vans.

The glorious madness of trying to get sunscreen onto a toddler who moves like an eel. But July also brings something else: heat. And for parents travelling abroad - to the Algarve, the Costa del Sol, or even just a stuffy mobile home in Wexford - that heat becomes a neurological event. By the time a child asks for water, they are already mildly dehydrated.

And dehydration directly impairs neural firing – slower reactions, poorer memory, more emotional volatility. ● Use oral rehydration sachets at the first sign of dark urine ● For a child refusing to drink: frozen yoghurt tubes, watermelon slices, cucumber sticks, or an ice lolly made from diluted apple juice. Fluid is fluid. Children do not feel thirsty when they are in water.

They also do not feel hot. A child can become severely dehydrated while splashing happily in a pool for two hours. Mandate a drink break every 20 minutes. Set a phone timer if you must.

Move to shade or air conditioning. Remove excess clothing. Apply cool wet cloths to neck, armpits, and groin. Offer small sips of cool water or rehydration solution.

If no improvement in 30 minutes, seek medical help. Call emergency services immediately. While waiting, move to cool environment. Immerse in cool water if possible.

Do not give anything by mouth if unconscious. This is a life-threatening emergency.
