While much of our wet summer has lent itself perfectly to a green and luscious lawn, the hot weather means all of our usual garden routines need to be adjusted.
Gardening during the hot weather is a tricky balance, yes you want to keep everything as hydrated as possible so your summer’s work doesn’t fry to a crisp, but tending to the garden at the wrong time can do more harm than good.
And top of the list for doing more harm than good, is mowing your lawn at the wrong time, according to Irish Gardner, Peter Dowdall. Peter says we should avoid mowing the lawn during extreme heat, as you’re essentially cutting off the soil’s food supply and it will struggle to recover, causing it to dry out and potentially crack under the intense sunshine. Instead, wait until temperatures cool or after some rainfall to give your grass a trim.
"Resist the temptation to water established lawns during periods of drought, however brown it might get. During the summer months, the garden is incredibly forgiving and resilient, even though the warmer weather is when it gets the most traffic all year", he explains."Grass growth will start to slow down in dry conditions, but don’t try using fertiliser to help your lawn recover as you will only risk burning it.
He adds: "You may have found yourself mowing once a week in the lead up to summer but during hot weather you can ease off on this as when the grass comes under stress in warmer temperatures it actually reduces growth, so you don’t want to over cut at this time."Join our new WhatsApp community!
