Expert claims HSE is failing thousands of children suffering from undiagnosed coeliac disease
The country’s health services are failing thousands of children who are suffering from undiagnosed coeliac disease, it has been claimed.
Gill Brennan, CEO of the Coeliac Society of Ireland said: “Thousands of children in Ireland have undiagnosed coeliac disease and many of those who are diagnosed have waited years for that diagnosis and to see a dietitian about moving on to a gluten free diet. Diagnosis of coeliac disease is 80% higher in children from the highest socioeconomic group compared to the lowest, studies in the UK and US have revealed.
“Coeliac disease is a serious medical condition which must be diagnosed. It is not an allergy or intolerance and people with coeliac disease aren’t faddy eaters. While there is no national register of how many people in Ireland have coeliac disease, the society estimates that 12,000 people have been diagnosed with the disease and as many as 47,500 are affected based on European averages.Sarah Keogh, Coeliac Society dietician, said that a coeliac test is more likely to be prompted by a patient than a doctor.
