Hot water bottles have a set lifespan and should not be used past their expiry date
As the nights are getting colder, combined with the high cost of heating our homes, we are now more likely than ever to reach for the comfort of our hot water bottles.
But one expert has warned of the dangers of using them incorrectly, revealing that hot water bottles come with the expiry date- but it can be difficult to spot.Alice Beer featured on This Morning to discuss the best ways we can stay safe this winter and to avoid any unnecessary accidents. The consumer journalist explained that each product comes with shocking usage date of only three years. Continuing to use a hot water bottle beyond this date can leave the user more prone to disasters, such as hot water burning through the weakened rubber. How to spot the date “They have a date of manufacture, which we don’t usually know about. But it can be found in inside the neck of the bottle," she explained.
“It’s got a ‘daisy wheel’ date. In the middle of the wheel, you will see a number which represents the year it was manufactured. It is then surrounded by 12 segments which represent the days and months of the year. Congratulations if you can actually work that out!She explained that if a particular hot water bottle isn’t equipped with the daisy wheel design, this can indicate that the product is manufactured by an unreliable source, or it is too old and so shouldn’t be used.
