A grave in the village of Annyalla, Co Monaghan, was exhumed by a team of experts searching for the first of 17 Disappeared victims, Joe Lynskey. This action was not connected to the screening of the controversial drama series 'Say Nothing,' although the increased publicity might encourage more people to come forward with information on those secretly buried during the Troubles.

Grave in the village of Annyalla in Co Monaghan exhumed by team of experts searching for Disappeared victim Joe Lynskey

A former Cistercian monk from west Belfast who became an IRA intelligence officer, Mr Lynskey was abducted, killed and buried by the IRA in 1972 after he was reportedly involved in a relationship with the wife of another IRA man – who he ordered to have shot without being sanctioned by the organisation.

The Lynskey family and relatives of those who own the family plot have been “paramount” throughout, Mr Hill told The Irish Times, confirming that several sets of remains were recovered in the “painstaking” operation. “Remember, these are human remains in excess of 50 years old. We’re also working upon DNA profiles which are familial based – we don’t have a DNA profile of Joe Lynskey or anyone else, so we’re slightly distanced from that current DNA examination.”
