The Taoiseach told reporters in Waterford this afternoon that extending the eviction ban was not a 'black or white decision'
TAOISEACH LEO VARADKAR has said that the Government will have to “weigh up the pros and cons” of extending the eviction ban, with a Green Party TD flagging concerns over dropping the policy. This evening, the three coalition leaders are due to meet with Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien to decide whether or not to extend the ban.
Varadkar added that while the Government had not yet reached a decision on extending the ban, there were “a number of options” available. “As we move into the spring and summer, we are already dealing with less hotel rooms. We are already under pressure from people fleeing the war in Ukraine. I’m not sure a full-scale lifting of the ban is an incredibly good idea right now,” she said.
Hourigan acknowledged that the ban could not stay in place forever and said that the Government must introduce policy change to tackle the housing crisis going forward. “I have seen very good examples in other countries whereby if you provide security of tenure and long lease and forever tenancies, you have favourable tax treatments for those good landlords who are doing the right thing.”
