Max Verstappen scoring pole might have been predictable, but Formula One qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix was anything but as rain, red flags and penalties galore spiced up proceedings.
The 53-point gap has swelled in the last two races thanks to Verstappen capitalizing on Pérez’s setbacks. Today offers a chance to further that gap. Pérez conceded he was “not going through a great moment” right now, his title hopes growing fainter and fainter. Alonso’s eyes are on the bigger picture. He noted during the post-qualifying press conference that Sergio Pérez and Charles Leclerc are both starting outside of the top 10 , creating an opportunity for Aston Martin to capitalize in both the constructors’ championship “and also for the Drivers’ eventually, if Checo is not scoring too many points.” Alonso is just 18 points behind the Red Bull driver heading into Sunday’s race.
For starters, Leclerc wants to understand what went down in Q2. Though he called to swap his tires for slicks on his out lap, the team told him to stay out and set a lap first. “I think we are just making our life way too difficult in those situations. I had a clear opinion. We decided to do something else. I am frustrated,” Leclerc said after qualifying.
