One of Formula One’s most infamous scandals, “Crashgate,” is back in the headlines after Felipe Massa and his lawyers made a push for justice and understanding this week.The incident went down during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. Nelson Piquet Jr. crashed in that September race, triggering a chain of events that helped his teammate, Fernando Alonso, win the race and left Massa out of the points.
Given the track’s narrow nature, the top of the grid stayed in their same qualifying spots, and it was safe to assume it would stay that way unless something happened. And it did. Initially, Piquet Jr. labeled his incident as a mistake. But nearly a year later, noise around that fateful race arose. Renault dropped Piquet Jr. after the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix, and he released, saying in part, “A manager is there to encourage and support you and provide you with opportunities. In my case it was the opposite. Flavio Briatore was my executioner.”
