Automatic grid penalties for using too many engine components in a single season is a fact of life for Formula 1 drivers, as one star has found out the hard way at the Belgian Grand Prix
Yuki Tsunoda has racked up penalties worth 60 places on the Belgian Grand Prix grid after a swathe of new engine parts were fitted to his car.
The number of new components fitted mandates an accumulated total of 60 places' worth of penalties. Of course, there are only 20 cars on the F1 grid so it simply means he will be starting Sunday's race from the very back of the pack. The Japanese racer is not the only Red Bull driver who will cop a penalty this weekend. It has already been confirmed that Max Verstappen faces a 10-place drop for using one internal combustion engine too many, meaning his best possible starting position on Sunday is 11th.
But even the Dutchman admits that the odds of victory will be very long for him, as a result of his grid drop. He said: "The last few races we have not been the fastest team. "I wouldn't say with a 10-place penalty that victory is in it, but a race can always turn upside down.
