The FAI will honour the memories of the players who competed in the 1924 Olympic Games later this month
The FAI are looking to track down relatives of two players and the trainer from the team now recognised as having played in Ireland’s first ever senior international men’s matches.
The football tournament at the 1924 Games saw the FAI field a men's national side for the first-time.These matches were initially considered senior international fixtures until FIFA re-classified them as amateur matches in the 1960s, but in 1999 FIFA decreed that each association could re-classify the matches.
And they put forward a proposal to the FAI board to re-classify the games against Bulgaria and the Netherlands at the Olympics, and friendlies against Estonia and the USA. Relatives of the 1924 players, who have been tracked down by the committee, will be invited to the Hungary game on June 4.
