The wife of a popular Irish soap opera actor has revealed his heartbreaking diagnosis with a rare and progressive neurodegenerative disease . David Heap, known for his role as Donal Maher in the long-running RTE series Fair City , has been diagnosed with Corticobasal Syndrome . Olwen Fouéré , Heap's wife and a renowned actress herself, shared the news during a poignant interview on RTÉ's The Meaning Of Life, as reported by the Sunday World.
Fouéré explained that Corticobasal Syndrome is a specific type of protein that attacks the brain, affecting various bodily functions. She likened the symptoms to those of Parkinson's and motor neurone diseases, highlighting its progressive and ultimately terminal nature. Despite the gravity of the diagnosis, Fouéré acknowledged that one symptom, a form of apathy or passiveness, might be a blessing for Heap. She recalled a visit to the neurologist's office where she emotionally broke down while they explained the disease's progression. Heap, however, remained calm and accepting, stating that he understood he would deteriorate.
