Nearly 400 high school students came to the Pickerington Public Library on Saturday to pick up a free prom dress from the Fairy Goodmothers group.

Mikaylah Phares arrived at the Pickerington Public Library with her mother Saturday, but unlike most typical library patrons, they were not there to check out books. Their mission was to pick out the perfect gown for the 18-year-old’sThe library’s front lobby had been transformed into a formal wear store, with hundreds of dresses of all colors, styles and sizes. When Phares saw a burgundy and gold gown with an embellished top and a swaying skirt, she snatched it from the rack right away.

“We have students from all over signing up, from Circleville and the Fairfield County area down south to Plain City up north,” Bauman said. “We have people who drove from hours away for the event, and they were telling me that there’s no way they could afford these dresses otherwise.”Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, central Ohio high school students have had to adapt and get creative to salvage the end-of-school tradition.

Jacqueline Bryant, director of communications at Columbus City Schools, said prom protocols are still being worked out. Schools will hold their proms starting in late April and throughout May.Phares said that both Pickerington Central, her high school, and Eastland Career Center, where she takes additional classes, are not implementing any COVID-19-related restrictions this year.
