Thousands of people turned out to vote on International Women’s Day to decide whether or not to extend the definition of a family to include those in a durable relationship as part of the “family amendment”

Counting in the family and care referendum has begun this morning following people across the country going to the polls on Friday.

The second “care amendment” proposed removing the so-called “women’s place in the home clause”. The addition of a new clause would mean that the State “shall strive to support” the provision of care “by members of a family to one another by reason of the bonds that exist among them”. Ministers and TDs speaking to the Irish Mirror on Friday admitted that they were worried about turnout.
