A family holiday was ruined when a drug user smashed his way into their home on their first trip away together

. Heartless John Wilson took family heirlooms, their car, a purse, bank cards and passport.

Wilson, 39, of Labray Road, Calverton, targeted the home in Arnold when the couple and and their one-year-old daughter went away with grandparents. A neighbour alerted them to the break-in on their holiday and broke the news their car had gone. Wilson took the wife's jewellery box with pearls, brooches and rosary beads inside which had been left to her by her grandmother, Nottingham Crown Court heard on Wednesday . A set of cufflinks were stolen, which had been left to the husband by his grandfather, and was the only thing he had to remember him.He said in a statement the burglary had "robbed us of security in our home". His wife and daughter stayed away for a few nights.

DNA was traced to Wilson from the property, where he left his blood and shards of glass everywhere. He was arrested and pleaded guilty to burglary and taking a vehicle without consent. Judge Julie Warburton sentenced him to 18 months in prison for the burglary and four months concurrently for the vehicle offence.

She said he committed the offence when he had relapsed from heroin use, but was now sober and complying with a substance misuse programme. Shannon English, mitigating, said Wilson relapsed following the death of his father.
