Tom (73) has been in ICU since the incident at his Co Sligo home in January

The family of a man left in ICU following an aggravated burglary nearly a year ago say they fear he’s “never going to get much better."

“He’s still in ICU, still critical. We’re resigned to the fact now that he’s never going to be much better,”“They still cannot get him out of the ICU. They need the beds but they told me Tom can’’t be let go until he gets to a certain level, if he ever gets to that level.” “Psychologically for Tom, I think he realises that every day he wakes up and he’s still in the same position, he can’t move.”

“I told him if he kept trying to move it will happen you know because they said it could go on for a couple of years and he may move but I don’t know. “It is difficult because we’re all getting ready for fun and a bit of a family get together and plan a Christmas meal.“You wouldn’t feel right either enjoying it,” he said. And he said he can’t believe it is now approaching almost a year since the incident that led to Tom being hospitalised.

“And the more he begins to realise what’s happened it will be very hard. I’m not even sure he has much of a concept of time.
