The family of Joe Drennan, who was killed in a hit-and-run by Kieran Fogarty, are celebrating news that the DPP is appealing the concurrent sentence given to Fogarty. Earlier this month, Fogarty received an eight-year sentence for firing a firearm and a six-year sentence for causing Drennan's death, meaning he will only serve eight years in total. Drennan's family campaigned tirelessly for justice, meeting with politicians and DPP officials, and their efforts have led to the appeal.

The family of hit and run victim Joe Drennan say they’ve been told the DPP is going to appeal the concurrent sentence handed to the thug responsible for his death.

Today Joe’s mother Marguerite told us she had just been given the good news that the appeal is going ahead. “We will continue to work hard on changing the sentencing laws to ensure victims get real justice and holds criminals to real accountability. Just a big thank you to everyone who helped us and was here for us during this incredibly difficult time.”Tragically, journalism student Joe was struck down and killed by Fogarty - who was speeding in his BMW 5 Series at 122km/ph - while standing at a bus stop on October 13, 2023.

“Joe was never involved in criminality in his life. He was such a good boy, and was so hard working, and he was never in any form of that, and to put him with a sentence for a gun charge was just an insult to us. It should never have been that way.” Describing Joe as her best friend, Sarah said he was a good person and a determined budding journalist who cared about justice and giving people a voice.

Fogarty, who was on bail and had outstanding warrants against him when he killed Joe, also received concurrent sentences for engaging in violent disorder, possessing cocaine, MDMA, alprazolam drugs for sale or supply, and for threatening to kill a man.“How does a lad drive around Limerick for 6-7 months with multiple warrants out for him?

“Joe didn't deserve to die. But to just dismiss him like that. He was just dismissed like he wasn’t there at all. At the end of the day that guy basically parked his car on top of him and left him to die like a dog in the street in Limerick. He thought of nobody but himself,” he said.
