Margaret Ward, 58, passed away in January following “19 months of hell” which began after the weight-loss operation in June 2023

The family of a woman who died from an infection they suspect she got following a sleeve gastrectomy in Turkey have warned others: “Don’t go, it’s not worth it”.

Margaret was told she could be waiting years for a weight loss procedure in Ireland and after learning the high cost to go private – she decided to look at clinics in Turkey. They paid around €4,000 which included flights, accommodations, transfers, and surgery. Charlie said the clinic was spotless and neither he nor Margaret had any initial concerns.

The listed causes of this infection according to the US Centers for Disease Control are from either injections of substances containing M. abscessus complex bacteria, invasive medical procedures using contaminated equipment or material, or when soil or water containing the bacteria gets into a wound.

She was responding well to a new antibiotic and after five months in the Mater Hospital – there were plans to move her back to Galway. But a week before the planned move, Margaret passed away following a cardiac arrest. “They said she was very sick and to come up straight away. It was a cruel, cruel death. I’ve never seen anybody suffer in my life like the way she suffered. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Charlie described Margaret as the “most gentle woman” who had never been in an argument declaring she “loved her family” and was “a very good-natured woman”.Margaret’s death certificate states she died after a prolonged illness following the surgery in Turkey. Martin urged the Government to speak to their Turkish counterparts, adding: “The HSE and the Minister of Health should consider doing a proper media campaign about the dangers surrounding Turkey.
