A father expresses frustration and concern as his 24 year old daughter-in-law questions her marriage after living together for two years, urging a calm approach and open discussion. The story highlights the challenges young couples face, the role of family support, and the importance of communication in maintaining healthy relationships. The article also touches on broader issues such as late home buying and the pressures on new parents to navigate emotional struggles while managing household dynamics
'They lived together for two years before getting married, so it wasn’t like she didn’t know what she was getting into - I feel like shaking some sense in to her'his is a generic photo of a daughter-in-law looking annoyed while a mum consoles her adult son in the background.

She’s moved into the spare room and says she needs space alone to think and sort out what she wants to do. He doesn’t understand how she can be so sure about him for the past few years and then have doubts about him so soon after getting married. They lived together for two years before getting married, so it wasn’t like she didn’t know what she was getting into.
I admit they’re both young, she’s only 24, but I am still very angry. I feel like shaking some sense into her. I’ve suggested to my son that he move back to live with us for a while, but he thinks leaving her alone in the flat might make things worse. It’s understandable that you feel angry and disappointed with your daughter-in-law, but it’s probably not a good idea to confront her.
Tempting as it may be to intervene, this may simply make matter worse. It could make the situation more tense than it already is and make it harder for them to talk things through. It’ll probably be easier to have open, honest discussions if they are still living together. Your daughter-in-law may have already lived with your son, but she is still very young and may only now be realising the real extent of her marriage commitment.
And while it may seem immature, it is better to get these doubts out in the open now than continue to pretend that everything is fine. My partner and I struggled for years to get together enough deposit to buy a home. A couple of months ago we finally succeeded, and I was really happy and excited to move into our new place, but, since moving in, I have found it difficult to sleep.
Most nights I lay awake for hours, and even if I do manage to get some sleep, I am still tired and snappy in the morning. My partner is keen to get all the decorating and DIY done quickly, but most days after work I am just too tired to help much. We moved so that he could be nearer to his job, but I am beginning to think that we should have stayed put.
On top of that you’re adjusting to a new area, a new property with a whole new set of nighttime noises and a different routine. You’re also both working and trying to do up the flat, so it’s not surprising that your sleep is being affected. You’ve only had the flat a few weeks, so I think it’s far too early to be thinking of this as a mistake, especially as you both worked so hard to get there.
Let your partner know how you are feeling and discuss whether some of the decorating can be put off for a while.
