Far-right AfD wins Saxony-Anhalt election, CDU suffers defeat
Saxony-Anhalt Election, Alternative For Germany (Afd), Friedrich Merz

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved a significant electoral victory in Saxony-Anhalt, surpassing expectations and defeating the incumbent conservative CDU. However, the party's path to forming a government is complicated by the refusal of other parties to cooperate with them.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) scored a historic victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, exit polls showed on Sunday, dealing a blow to Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservatives.

The AfD won 44.5 per cent of the vote, up from 20.8 per cent in 2021, while Merz's CDU fell to 18.5 per cent from 37.1 per cent. Although the AfD emerged as the dominant force, it remains unclear whether the result will be sufficient to allow the party to govern, as most other parties have ruled out forming a coalition with them
