Leeds United producing a counter attacking masterclass at Millwall but it was their defensive efforts that laid the foundations for three points
Leeds United’s attacking riches were what grabbed the headlines after Sunday’s 3-0 win over Millwall and rightly so. The Whites ruthlessly sliced Millwall open on three occasions before demonstrating the clinical edge that ought to carry them into a promotion race as the Championship campaign progresses.
Farke has clearly been working on his backline over the last few weeks, having seen them concede seven goals in the first four league games and he’ll now be hoping that Leeds can start to rely on their back four and goalkeeper as the games start to come thick and fast. In terms of individuals, we’ll start with the Whites’ number one, who was nothing short of commanding in the capital.
He’s not there yet and some of his early distribution was questionable against Millwall, but his efforts to maintain his clean sheet could not be faulted, blocking three shots from the home side, rushing off his line quickly to deal with passes in behind and dealing with high balls into the six-yard box. The 23-year-old showed nous beyond his years at times, too, to take the sting out the contest and allow Leeds to take a breath when under the pump.
Sam Byram looked the part at left-back, yet again. While Luke Ayling, who was challenged by Ryan Longman down the right edge, had a strong game after a couple of nervy flashes, too, to soften the blow of losing Djed Spence to injury. Indeed, Leeds will be tested by better teams this season with more attacking flair and talent than Millwall.
