Daniel Farke wanted to throw bottles and show Leeds United's players the burning fire inside him when they came in at half-time on Saturday but stopped himself being over-emotional
Emotional managers have their place in some dressing rooms, but Daniel Farke could see that was a long way from what his Leeds United side needed at the weekend. The Whites had gone into the dressing room at half-time only level with Bristol City after conceding a sloppy equaliser off a set-piece on the stroke of the break.
It would have been understandable if Farke had gone into the changing room with a furious anger on display, kicking anything inanimate in sight. And yet, the German did not feel that was what the players, who knew full well how they had let themselves down, needed. “I needed first to calm myself down because I was so annoyed we didn't bury this game and I know how difficult it then is if you get such a sucker punch to go back in the second half and to win this game,” he said.“So my mood was I wanted to throw some water bottles, but I didn't want to show this to the players because they were annoyed anyway, so they don't then need an over-emotional manager in the dressing room just shouting at them.
“It was more like to calm myself down in order to give the right tactical insight in order to be prepared for what we have to do in order to find then another gap, in order to go in the lead and win this game and what was important for the second half. “We spoke relatively unemotional about what is necessary and it was the right choice instead of showing my real fire burning inside.”
