We decided to take a look back at the decade between the end of WWII and the beginning of the Troubles. These archival images capture Northern Ireland during such a transitional time.

The 1950s were a transitional time for Northern Ireland.

World War II had been brought to a close by an Allied victory five years prior. After several long years of evacuations, rationing, blackouts, families being separated and Nazi bombings, Northern Ireland was free from international war. Yet the war had taken a significant toll on morale and the economy. The people of Northern Ireland had plenty to mourn, from loved ones and homes to jobs and businesses.The '50s were therefore a time of recovering and rebuilding. And Northern Irish people found a way to find joy in the little things through grief and financial hardship.
