Adults over 50 and those 18 and older who are immunocompromised are eligible for fourth doses of either Pfizer or Moderna's COVID-19 vaccines.

"Based on an analysis of emerging data, a second booster dose of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine could help increase protection levels for these higher-risk individuals,” Peter Marks, MD, PhD, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in the release. “Additionally, the data show that an initial booster dose is critical in helping to protect all adults from the potentially severe outcomes of COVID-19.

According to CDC data, only 45% of people who are"fully vaccianted," i.e., have received two shots of either Pfizer or Moderna or one shot of Johnson & Johnson, have gotten their first booster. That leaves challenges, Marks said later in a news briefing. As for a fourth dose -- or second booster --"there is evidence now that it can decrease the risk of hospitalization and death in older individuals – so we think this is something for people to consider doing," Marks said.
