Singapore’s recent deployment of “robo cops” – two machines that patrol– have raised questions and concerns about how robots may change the face of policing.
Superintendent Lim Ke Wei said: “These patrol robots operate autonomously alongside our officers, providing additional eyes and support on the ground.” “From what I understand, these robots consist of a mobile, wheeled platform, which allows them to move around smooth surfaces [such as] inside an airport, easily,” he explains.
“The robo cops seem to be similar to what we see is happening with driverless pods that can transport people without a driver. Instead of one safety operator being in the vehicle, one human can have full control of the driverless pod”. “Serve the public trust, protect the innocent, uphold the law” – this is the mantra Robocop follows in the 1987 science-fiction film. But the surveillance capabilities of the robots have attracted concern, particularly regarding their data accumulating faculties, and the fact that they can be used to implement cordons.
The machines are also being used to form cordons. This works by the police programming the robot to deploy an interim measure, such as blinkers, sirens and speakers, to block a space, and to alert bystanders to the arrival of police officers. It cannot, however, forcibly remove a person.
